Matilda Award for Cultural Excellence

Ivanna Mayorenko

Convocation, in conjunction with the UWA Student Guild, makes an annual presentation of a cultural award (known as the Matilda Award) recognising excellence and outstanding achievement in cultural pursuits such as:

  • Music - Classical, rock, popular, jazz and any other form of music.

  • Literature - Fiction, non-fiction, short stories, prose, poetry, and any other form of literature.

  • Public speaking - Debating, specialised expertise in a foreign language, and any other form of public speaking.

  • Dance - Ballet, contemporary, ballroom and all facets such as choreography, production and performance.

  • Visual Arts - Painting, graphic design, textiles, sculpture and any other form of visual art.

  • Drama - Theatre, television, street theatre, production and any other form of drama.

The Matilda Award can be presented for excellence in any form of cultural pursuit.

Individuals or groups can be nominated for the award.

Nomination may be made on the basis of work as part of a University course or on the basis of participation in arts in the wider community.

The significance of the nominee's contribution either in terms of personal achievement or of contribution to group achievement, at international, at national, at state, and at community and university levels will be considered.

Ivanna Mayorenko2006 Award Winner - Ivanna Mayorenko

Ivanna Mayorenko is a talented dancer, admired for her ability to promote multiculturalism and respect within the diverse Australian community by performing cultural dances from around the world, including Russian, Gypsy, Spanish, Ukrainian, Macedonian, Greek, and Latin American styles.

Ivanna's talent has been recognised in various awards, including Gold and Silver Medals at the South West Dance Festival, First Place in the University's Talent Night 2003 and Second Place in 2004 and 2005, and First Place at the National Russian Youth Dance Competition. She has made numerous public performances at community events, concerts and festivals, including Australia Day Concerts, the City of Perth Arts Festival, the Fairbridge Festival and KULCHA Summer Concerts.

Aside from her dancing, Ivanna is studying Biomedical Science and Engineering, currently engaged in a project involving the design and implementation of advanced surgical equipment. She is very active in student life as a member of the Archaeology Club, the Underwater Club, the Outdoor Club, the Hispanic Society, the Young Engineers, the Association of Mechatronics Engineers, the Enviro Collective and Greenpeace, to name just a few.

Value of the Award

The award consists of a framed certificate and $1000.
